Got a large size video from a friend but cannot download it due to restrictions on your internet? Have a friend having unlimited data plan on his/her phone but you don’t know how to utilize it from your phone? Well, it’s time for you to learn how to create a wi-fi hotspot from your friend’s phone and enjoy unlimited data download from your own handset!
What is a Wi-Fi hotspot?
Setting up your phone as a wi-fi hotspot simply means broadcasting the internet connectivity in your phone for a laptop, tablet or another phone that access the internet. Once you finish setting up your phone as a wi-fi hotspot, you can share the security password with any other device, enabling it to access internet through your phone.
Wi-fi data sharing is built into the android phones. You need not install any third party apps for this purpose.
Which version of android supports wi-fi hotspot?
All the android phones and tablets with version 2.2 (Froyo) can be used as mobile hotspots or portable Wi-Fi hotspots, letting you share your data connection on your Android device wirelessly with other devices, including other cell phones, tablets, and computers.
I am using my Nexus 4 phone with android version 4.2 (JellyBean) to show you the steps for creating the hotspot.
Create your own wi-fi hotspot
Ready to build your very own wi-fi hotspot? Just follow these steps:
1. On the Home screen, go to Applications -> Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> More..
2. Tap on “Tethering and portable hotspot” option.
3. Tap on “Set up Wi-Fi hotspot option. Here you can check the security settings of your hotspot. The “Network SSID” will be the name of your wi-fi hotspot. All the other devices will be seeing this name in their list of wi-fi networks. You can change the ID if needed. The password is set by default by your android phone.
If you want to change your password – and it is recommended you change the default password – then tap on the “Show password” checkbox at the bottom, and then change the password.
Tap on “Save” button after you finish setting up the wi-fi hotspot security options.
4. Now that your hotspot is all set, all you need to do is enable the hotspot, thus letting the others know that your phone is ready to accept their connections. Tap on the “Portable Wi-Fi hotspot” checkbox. You will get a message just below the “Portable Wi-Fi hotspot” checkbox saying “Portable hotspot <<Network SSID>> active (Network SSID will be your device name as explained in step 3 above).
There! Your phone has now become a Wi-Fi hotspot, ready to provide internet to the needy!
