What is a Gravatar?

Gravatar – Globally Recognized Avatar – is a graphical representation of a user i.e you. It can be your picture, or an icon of your liking, or any image you would love to be recognized with. It is supported by most of the popular platforms including wordpress. In fact, wordpress has given some options for your default gravatars, which will be seen next to your name in every comment you write and every post you publish – assuming you leave your email with your name, as gravatar is associated with your email and not your name or blog.

Do I really need a gravatar?

Simple answer is YES, you need a gravatar. If you want to comment on a popular blog post, you most certainly won’t be the first one to post it. There will be many more just like you who have been following the blog and posting their comments before you. So how do you make yourself stand out among the others? By your gravatar of course  Your unique gravatar will make you instantly recognizable to others, and also makes it easy for the publishers of the blog to identify their loyal users. What is the use of such recognition you say? That makes for an altogether new post 🙂

OK I like this gravatar thing. How do I get it?

You can create your own gravatar quite easily. Go to the gravatar website and log in with the email ID you will be using to post your comments. Then you will have to upload a picture, logo, or any image you wish. This is just a one time thing. Once uploaded, your gravatar will start showing against your name in about 10-15 minutes. You can also add multiple email IDs to the same account, and associate different gravatars for each ID.

If your gravatar is still not showing on your wordpress blog, go to Settings -> Discussion, where you can see the check box for “Avatar Display” shown below:
