How The Internet Began – 8 ‘First’ Things of the World Wide Web

Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web in May 1990 at CERN, Switzerland. From that day on, our lives were changed forever, the globe became smaller, information became more accessible than ever, and a revolution of a magnitude never known before had kick started.

Here I am listing down the ‘First’ things which became available on the internet and for the internet. These things inspired others to create better inventions, making our lives easier. These things initiated the internet revolution!

1. First Website

World’s first ever website was developed at CERN by Tim Berners Lee and his team. The first web page address was : http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html which gave some information about what World Wide Web project was all about.

How do we see the websites? Through the browsers of course! The very first web browser, which was created by Tim Berners Lee and team, was called, well what else, but ‘WorldWideWeb’ browser! This browser was also an editor, making the web an interacting medium. You can check out a snapshot of the browser taken later in 1993 here.

Web server is the hardware (computer) and the software (computer application) which helps in delivering the web content that you access through the internet. The very first web server was developed on a NeXT computer, using a NeXTSTEP platform.

With the web server, web browser and the web page ready to be used, there had to be the first person ever to experience the delights of the internet. And that honor went to Robert Cailliau, who not only used the internet for the first time, but also collaborated with Tim Berners Lee on the WorldWideWeb project. (Now you know who was in the ‘team’ mentioned above).

5. First E-Mail

The very first e-mail was sent over the internet using the ARPANET network architecture. You can view the two machines which were used to transmit and receive the historic e-mail message here.The exact content of that mail is unknown, but it gave instructions about using the at(@) sign to separate the user’s name from his host computer name.

6. First Search Engine

Now with various websites popping up all over the world, there arose the obvious need of searching   for information. What is a book without an index, right? So was developed the first ever online search engine – Archie. It was created in 1990 by Alan Emtage along with Peter J. Deutsch while they were students at McGill University in Montreal.

7. First Shopping (E-Commerce) Website

Before the current moguls such as e-Bay or Amazon, German based company ‘NetConsult Computer Systems, Ltd.’ founded the first ever online shopping website – Intershop. Shopping was never the same again!

8. First Social Networking Website

We all share the love-hate relationship with the social networking phenomenon. But do you know who started the whole online collaboration thing? That was SixDegrees.com, the very first social networking website in the world! (at least the first website according to the modern definition of social networking).
